Ceramics on the Edge
21–23 June 2012
Douglas, Isle of Man
in collaboration with Manx National Heritage and the Centre for Manx Studies, University of Liverpool
The conference will focus on the role of ceramics in the understanding of the economic, technological and psychological development of peoples and places on the periphery of developed medieval, early modern and modern societies, beyond the usual limits of market economies and social norms. It will range over the whole period of the Group's interest from the early medieval up to the 20th century.
At the biennual three-day conference, the Gerald Dunning Memorial Lecture is given by an invited speaker (to be confirmed).
Themes for the conference
There is a wide range of possible understandings and experience of marginality depending on time and place. Papers are invited on any subject that can link ceramic assemblages with the theme. The following subject areas will be included:
- The nature of ceramic production and consumption networks in marginal societies.
- Ceramic responses to political change.
- The reasons for the adoption of pottery and the transfer of technology from more 'advanced' economies.
Proposals for paper on any aspect of the conference from anywhere in the world will be welcome. If you would be interested in presenting a paper of around 20 minutes duration plus discussion, please send an abstract of approximately 200 words to Peter Davey by 9 January 2012.
